Wataru and his father are the only ones who live in their large, empty manor, despite the amount of rooms it has. Of course, that's minus all the spirits there. They go through mothers often and frequently - Wataru's father will marry so his son has a mother to raise Wataru while he's away, but something always ends up... happening to her. Neither of them really understand but goddamn if Mr. Sanzu won't keep trying.
Speaking of, Wataru's last mother had a modern kitchen added, much to the chagrin of the spirits there. The oven terrifies Wataru.

Wataru grew up away from even the simplest of electronic devices, so he needs help at school; normally in the form of a teacher following him around, or another student helping out.

He's scared shitless of cars and refuses to cross streets without an adult, except for at night when most roads are empty. Needless to say, he doesn't get out much.

He's also terrified of most modern buildings and skyscrapers. Also, most electronic toys. TV static is unnerving too.
Basically, leaving his house every day is culture shock to him.

He also doesn't wear pants oustide of school. Normally just a robe and some sandals. Even when going shopping, that's all he feels he needs.
He finds modern style clothing uncomfortable and constricting.

Wataru started soccer on request from one of his friends, and considers it fun and interesting - it puts his stubbornness to good use, and he feels useful in his position of defender.

Surprisingly, personal space isn't an issue for him - as long as he's the one handing out affection, he'll only stop when told to, and has a tendency to cross boundaries without realizing it.
If the affection's being sprung on him though, he tenses up like a log and takes a while to get comfortable with it.

Because of his irregularly grey and pale complexion, mixed with his usual wardrobe, most people in town actually believe him to be a ghost upon meeting him - and even after knowing him, still believe it to be true.

He understands adults much better than he does other kids - as his father puts it, Wataru has an "old soul".
Despite his maturity and formality though, he's prone to slipping up and acting childish when he's upset - using child's words or throwing a fit until he realizes how unseemly it is.

The smell of alcohol is both comforting and sad to Wataru - his birth mother was a drunkard, so it's a smell he got used to as an infant.
... Though, she was also the kind to slip him a bit of sake to get him to stop crying. To this day he has an abnormal liquor tolerance for someone his age, and no one knows where it came from.

Yes, Wataru's not sure if he's dead or alive - but he's decided that if he is truly still living, then he'd much rather be dead.
Sometimes he likes to test it by wandering into dangerous situations, but he's always saved by someone.

... Despite all of this, Sanzu's actually ridiculously bright. He just has no ounce of common sense whatsoever.
It makes him a good soccer player, though - he tends to rush headlong into things to get the ball from their opponent, even if he may end up injured from a bash or a collision.
He's also known for hiding injuries well, so he can continue playing.

Wataru's temperament is a lot like Pandora's box: it's rather plain and unexciting on the outside, despite the mysteriousness of its contents. But shake it around and open it, and you have a whole slew of bad things to deal with.
